Scroll Press works with independent Book Editors who are experienced professionals with an established track record. These Book Editors work in close conjunction with the author to bring the manuscript to a publication ready state.
Book Editors may be Creative Writing professors/writers in MFA or other creative writing programs or professional Book Editors who have edited books of fiction or creative non-fiction or published writers who also have an established editorial record.
Our Book Editors encourage talented new or established authors to submit their synopsis of their manuscript and a sample chapter to Scroll Press.
In accordance with Scroll Press submission guidelines, the author submits a cover letter, a synopsis of the manuscript, a sample chapter, and a letter of recommendation from a Book Editor who encouraged the author. The Book Editor’s letter should outline reasons why he or she is in support of this writer. Please send all these materials to Scroll Press in hard copy via regular postal services, including a self addressed stamped envelope (SASE) for a reply.
If you are a writer and do not have a Book Editor in support of your manuscript, you may still send the rest of the materials to Scroll Press; however, we give priority to those who already have a working relationship with a Book Editor.
If the synopsis is suitable for Scroll Press, then we will invite the author to submit the complete manuscript. Otherwise, the synopsis will be returned with a rejection letter.
If the synopsis is accepted, the author will prepare the manuscript in accordance with the Scroll Press Style Guide and submit the complete manuscript in accordance to Scroll Press Guidelines to the Book Editor. Once the Book Editor has reviewed the manuscript and sent his or her comments to the Scroll Press editor, the author will receive notification from Scroll Press about the status of their manuscript; it will either be accepted or rejected. If accepted, then the author and the Book Editor will receive a Scroll Press Publication Agreement contract. Once the author, the Book Editor, and the publisher have all signed the contract and the author and the Book Editor have returned the original contract to Scroll Press, retaining one copy for their own records, the author, Book Editor and Publisher are bound by the timelines and terms specified in the Publication Agreement contract.
The author will receive 10% of the retail price in royalties. The Book Editor will receive 3% of the retail price in royalties and will be responsible for editing the manuscript through all stages of the publication process.
The author and Scroll Press are responsible for book marketing and promotion. The author will receive guidelines from Scroll Press about their role in these processes. Scroll Press sends out review copies. Once reviews are published, the author receives notification and can share the reviews with readers on their section of the Scroll Press web site.
